Regular checks are essential to keep your car in good working order. The substance that dampens the brake pads, brake fluid must be monitored with each oil change. Learn how to check the brake fluid in your car to make sure your brakes are in working order.
Instructions to follow
Locate the brake fluid reservoir in the brake master cylinder. The cylinder is located at the rear of the engine on the driver’s side of the car. A cap – usually yellow with the letters “DOT” on top – covers the tank.
Check the brake fluid level in the cylinder. In recent vehicles, the tank is clear with the line “max” and the “low” line marked. Simply show where the brake fluid is in comparison with the level markers. Old cars have clear tanks and require further inspection. Remove the tank cap and look inside. The brake fluid must be two thirds full. Any amount requires less brake fluid.
Replace the brake fluid reservoir cap securely. If additional brake fluid is required, look at the cap and find the fluid type number you need. Vehicles that are more domestic take “DOT 3” brake fluid; Consult your owner’s manual for the fluid required by your car.
